The Women’s International Study Center is pleased to announce a presentation and conversation with Courtney E. Martin, TED Speaker, columnist and author of The New Better Off: Reinventing the American Dream. Those who attended our 2014 inaugural symposium will remember Courtney’s presentation reflecting on the challenges and opportunities faced by young women today.
The majority of Americans do not believe that present generations will be better off economically than prior generations. While some may see this as unfortunate, Courtney reads it as a provocation: better off based on whose standards? In her wide-ranging presentation, Courtney will explore the ways Americans are redefining success and seeking happiness, largely influenced by enduring traditional and feminist values that focus more on fulfillment, family, community, and fun, and less on acquiring debt, status, and stuff. It’s what she calls “the new better off” and it’s more about community and creativity than dollars and cents.
There will be opportunity for questions and discussion with Courtney after her presentation.
Copies of her book will also be available.
Following the event we will host our Annual Lawn Party.
