The Sibelius Academy of Finland, and Acequia Madre House present a concert at St. Francis Auditorium in the NM Museum of Art, Friday July 11, at 1 pm. Magnus Lindberg and voice and instrumental students from the Sibelius Academy’s Creative Dialogue VI workshop perform Lindberg’s works, contemporary vocal/string classical repertoire, and new compositions.
The Creative Dialogue workshop focuses on the dialogue between living composers and instrumentalists and explores how each draws inspiration from the other. The Instructors are internationally prominent music figures, Canadian soprano Barbara Hannigan, cellist Anssi Karttunen, and composer Magnus Lindberg. Participating composers will be writing pieces for singers and string instruments. The workshop is presented by the Sibelius Academy of Finland and Acequia Madre House.
These advanced music students are chosen from major music conservatories and universities. This year’s Creative Dialogue participants come from the Eastman School of Music, Florida State University, the Juilliard School of Music and Drama, Columbia University, The Butler School of Music at the University of Texas at Austin, Cornell University, Northwestern University Bienen School of Music, McGill University, and the University of the Arts—the Sibelius Academy.
This is the sixth year the workshop has taken place at Acequia Madre House, the former home of the Paloheimo family. The family founded the living history museum, El Rancho de las Golondrinas, and is related to Jean Sibelius, Finland’s great composer.
Acequia Madre House is home to the Women’s International Study Center (WISC) www.wisc-amh.org which honors the achievements of women in the arts, sciences, cultural preservation and business, while preserving the Santa Fe home and related collections. Scholars of distinction are invited for periods in residence to study, to hold master classes and symposia, and to create new works.
The Sibelius Academy, one of the most respected music conservatories in Europe, which was founded in 1862, offers a university education in performance, creative art, and research. A branch of the national University of the Arts, the Sibelius Academy is committed to fostering and renewing Finland’s musical culture, and cultural heritage.
