In February 2017, Chad Alligood, curator of Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, will be in residence at WISC to draft an essay for an upcoming monograph on Judy Chicago to be published by the National Museum of Women in the Arts. This volume will offer new scholarship on a variety of specialized topics throughout the artist’s career. Alligood’s work will be the first chronological essay in the volume and will focus on the artist’s influential minimal works of the 1960s.
Judy Chicago’s five-decade career as an artist, author, educator and feminist has resulted in tremendous influence within and beyond contemporary American art. The subject of exhibitions in the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, she is also the author of a number of books published in several foreign language editions, bringing her art and philosophy to readers worldwide.
In 1974, Chicago created her most well-known work, The Dinner Party. This monumental multimedia project, a history of women in Western Civilization, has been been exhibited sixteen times in six countries. It’s now the centerpiece of the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art at the Brooklyn Museum in Brooklyn, NY.
Over the course of the event on Friday, February 10th, a fascinating chapter of Chicago’s life will unfold as Alligood reflects on the artist’s early career, his interaction with her as part of his essay preparation, and the monograph project that will engage 18 writers across the world.

In addition to Friday’s event, form & concept will host a new performance piece by local art group Victory Grrrls on Saturday, February 11 at 3pm. Playing on feminist themes that Chicago has explored throughout her career, Niomi Fawn, Thais Mather and Lucy Madeline will illuminate the continued vitality of the powerful social movement that was bolstered by Chicago’s artworks and activism.
ABOUT THE FELLOW AND THE ARTIST
A specialist in American art since 1940, Chad Alligood joined Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art as a curator in 2013. Alongside Crystal Bridges’ President Don Bacigalupi, Alligood curated State of the Art: Discovering American Art Now, culminating thousands of miles of cross-country travel and nearly 1,000 in-studio interviews with artists. Attracting a record-breaking attendance of 175,000 visitors, State of the Art represented Crystal Bridges’ largest exhibition in both scope and physical scale, including 102 artists from across the country. The exhibition garnered the 2015 Excellence in Exhibition Award from the American Alliance of Museums. The next phase involves traveling the exhibition to other venues around the country.
Most recently, Alligood curated Warhol’s Nature, which explored the artist’s surprising engagement with nature as subject matter; the exhibition was accompanied by a catalog published by Scala. Alligood’s ongoing work at Crystal Bridges focuses on the collection, presentation, and scholarship of modern and contemporary American art. He recently led a major re-installation of the 1940s to Now gallery, which included new acquisitions and a re-imagining of works and movements from the permanent collection.
Alligood is a Perry, Georgia native who earned his bachelor’s degree in History of Art and Architecture from Harvard University, his master’s degree in Art History from the University of Georgia, and has completed his PhD coursework at City University of New York. His art historical research focuses on the art and artists of Southern California in the 1960s and ’70s.
